Kaliningrad, 25 September 2025 – X5 (MOEX: X5), a leading Russian food retailer, has announced the opening of a new distribution center in the Kaliningrad Region. The advanced logistics facility, spanning 26,500 sq m, is located in the Guryevsky Urban District.
With a daily throughput capacity of 1,600 pallets, the center can handle over 5,000 SKUs, supplying up to 300 Pyaterochka and Victoria stores across the region. It features a range of advanced equipment and automated technologies, including express diagnostics for product quality control, voice picking for order assembly, and height-control cameras on electric pallet stackers for precise load handling. An automated temperature control system in the production area ensures correct storage conditions for diverse products. The center is equipped with banana ripening rooms, capable of handling up to 50,000 boxes per month, using ethylene control to create ideal conditions for ripening and ensure bananas delivered to stores are fresh and at their ideal ripeness.
“The opening of the distribution center marks an important step for the Company in strengthening its logistics infrastructure in the Kaliningrad Region. At present, we already operate more than 150 Pyaterochka stores and 24 Victoria supermarkets in the region. The new logistics hub will allow us to speed up delivery times, provide local producers with a convenient sales platform, and ultimately increase the availability of fresh, high-quality products in our stores. It will also create new jobs, support the chain’s growth, and reinforce our market position,” said Darya Osinovskaya, Executive Director of Pyaterochka’s North-West Territory.
The distribution center has already begun to serve more than 250 suppliers, including 51 producers from the Kaliningrad Region, creating additional opportunities for local businesses and ensuring product availability for residents.
Aleksey Besprozvannykh, Governor of the Kaliningrad Region, described the opening of the distribution center as a milestone event for the entire regional retail industry. “As the governor, I consider it very important that this center is already operating for the benefit of the region. It has created more than 300 new jobs. Among the suppliers are more than 50 companies from the Kaliningrad Region. Thanks to the new facility, their products will reach customers fresher and will be reliably present on store shelves,” said Aleksey Besprozvannykh, Governor of the Kaliningrad Region. He also noted X5 stores’ involvement in the region’s affordable pricing program. “Thanks to the chain’s wide footprint, the products included in the program – those marked on shelves with blue price tags – are available in all municipalities of the Kaliningrad Region,” the Governor added.
The distribution center includes a dry warehouse, chilled and frozen storage units, an acceptance area for frozen goods, as well as offices and other staff areas. In addition, the center boasts a 1,950 sq m cutting-edge smart kitchen, which is expected to be launched shortly. This project will create more than 200 additional jobs, with the kitchen’s capacity allowing the production of up to 20,000 ready-to-eat items daily. The smart kitchen employs advanced quality management systems that monitor the entire production cycle, from raw materials to packaging. New equipment ensures long-lasting freshness of meals without compromising taste or quality.
“We have extensive expertise in designing and building multi-temperature warehouses, with over 400,000 sq m of such projects delivered so far. The new distribution center in Kaliningrad is equipped with state-of-the-art refrigeration and freezing units covering a wide range of temperature modes – from deep-freeze to the storage of temperature-sensitive products. The key advantage is the use of the natural refrigerant CO₂, which enables X5 to significantly reduce energy consumption and improve the environmental sustainability of the facility. Our fourth joint project with X5 is of special importance, as it has resulted in the first high-quality multi-temperature distribution center in the Kaliningrad Region,” said Elena Babenko, CEO of Orientir Group, the distribution center’s developer.
The smooth operation of the facility is supported by more than 300 employees and 12 special-purpose vehicles. Each vehicle is equipped with refrigeration units to maintain product freshness at every stage of delivery.
