Moscow, 4 June 2026 – X5 (MOEX: X5), a leading Russian food retailer that operates the Pyaterochka, Perekrestok, and Chizhik retail chains, has completed a large-scale project on the robotisation of its Novaya Riga distribution centre (DC) in the Moscow Region. The initiative is part of X5’s strategy to digitalise and automate logistics processes in order to increase productivity, reduce operating costs, and improve cargo handling.
The facility now operates 67 forklift mobile robots (FMRs), 15 automated pallet wrappers, and an inventory robot. All technologies integrate seamlessly with Nexus WMS, X5’s proprietary warehouse management platform.
The FMRs handle pallet movements of up to two tonnes autonomously, delivering accurate positioning and offering safe internal transport. Automated wrappers package pallets at full height, ensuring product integrity during dispatch and transit. The mobile inventory robot continuously scans storage racks, maintaining real-time stock data accuracy through automatic synchronisation with the warehouse management system. A single inventory robot saves 180 man-hours per inventory cycle.
By deploying domestically developed IT solutions and software, X5 has eliminated low-value manual tasks, boosted warehouse operator productivity, minimised human error and related risks, increased precision, and accelerated operating performance. The robotic deployment has boosted warehouse productivity by 33%, strengthened throughput capacity and accuracy metrics, while cutting manual labour costs and reducing the risk of cargo damage.
“Robotisation of distribution centres is one of the key priorities for X5’s supply chain development. We are building a resilient, flexible, and technology-driven logistics infrastructure that supports our business growth and elevates customer service. By 2028, robotics and AI will bolster operational efficiency across our stores, dark stores, distribution centres, and delivery operations, which will drive the Company’s continued growth and the further expansion of its businesses.” – said Alexander Kostin, Managing Director, X5 Tech.
In the future, X5 plans to scale similar solutions to other DCs of its retail chains across the Company’s geographic footprint.
The Novaya Riga facility, which opened in summer 2022, spans nearly 92,000 sqm and employs approximately 1,100 people. As Russia’s largest Class A multi-temperature warehouse, it serves 1,170 Pyaterochka stores.
