Social Responsibility
X5 Retail Group pursues its activities in accordance with its high standards of social responsibility.
Our social initiatives involve support of various humanitarian and charitable projects.
Jointly with the Moscow Education Department we develop specialized programs aimed at social and financial support of homes for the disabled, orphan asylums and boarding schools.
On the 23rd of November, 2006 X5 Retail Group signed a partnership agreement with the Russian Football Union (RFU), under which the Company received the status of the RFU’s general partner and the official partner of the Russian national football team. The Company allocated US$14m to construction of new playgrounds, children’s football schools, as well as to support of young sports talents.
Charity is one of the key aspects of the Company’s social activities. A most important element of these activities is the strategic partnership with the Liniya Zhizni (Life Line) charity fund for salvation of severely ill children. X5 is a member of the fund’s board of guardians.
In the fall of 2007, in the framework of its strategic partnership with the Liniya Zhizni charity fund, X5 started the charity program “A Minute for Life”. Under that program, on the first day of each month all of X5’s revenues from sales during one minute were donated to the fund. As a result, in the course of approximately one year over 6 million rubles were transferred to the Liniya Zhizni charity fund for financing of medical operations.
Another aspect of co-operation with the Liniya Zhizni charity fund has been placing donation boxes in Perekrestok stores to collect contributions.
The charity program “Perekrestok to schools!” is already five years old. The program is supported by the Moscow Government and the Moscow Education Department. It is well-known: from the 20th of August to the 20th of October 2009 customers of Perekrestok stores, while doing their ordinary shopping, voted for their favourite school. The total number of votes given by the Perekrestok customers has exceeded 12 million by now. Only in 2005-2009 over 25,000 schools in 40 cities of Russia participated in the program and received 11,000 pieces of equipment, including computers, photocopying machines and video devices.
In 2009, under the same program, X5 organized a benefit concert with participation of the world’s popular music artists, which was attended by approximately 8,000 school teachers and other education employees of Moscow.
X5 also participates in implementation of target programs aimed at supporting talents and protecting socially vulnerable groups and severely ill children. Particular attention is given to veterans, who embody the great history and intellectual wealth of Russia.
By developing our retail chains in various regions, we create new workplaces and additional sources of budget revenues, thereby promoting the social development of Russia.
